How do you take the immensely popular Ikea lamp, FLYGEL, and extend it's life, make it more efficient, and cultivate sustainable behavior?

Using the Life - Cycle Assessment technique, I assessed the environmental impacts associated with all the stages of Ikea's desk lamp and developed a redesign, FLYGEL II, to minimize those environmental impacts.


RESEARCH

This started with an Analysis of the FLYGEL desk lamp addressing energy, resources, waste, and emissions of one desk lamp during its life cycle. The life cycle is measured by its impact = Halogen Bulb hours = 12v50w = 3000 Hours.

The scope of design This excludes the interior transformer component, 2 pronged plug, maintenance of machinery, manufacturing facilities, and cost of employment.
